Ferruccio Cataldo FTR champion Italia
Meet Italy’s Number 1
Ferruccio Cataldo FTR champion Italia – Ferruccio Cataldo maybe a new name to some, but over here in Europe he is better known for his specialist reloading online shop, Accuracy Reloading. The latter has been key to provide European shooters with the same high quality components available across the pond in the USA in a timely manner.
As we all know, superb rifles without the best reloading components can’t bring any trophies home. Well Ferruccio understood this and some more. This man from Salerno, kicks above his weight by a fair bit snatching the 2021 championship from the hands of equally competent Italian shooters.
We caught up with him during his busy day to find out more about his experiences, rifle setup, ammo and handloading practices. He does this for a living so he must know something!
Italian Version (English version further down)
Rod: Da quanto tempo tiri fclass Ferru?

Building a custom rifle?

Good luck Ferru!
English Version
Rod:
How long have you been shooting fClass Ferruccio?
I remember we met for the first time at the European Championships in 2017 and I noticed you were the spotter for the Italian team and you invited me over.
FC: Hi rod, I remember well when we first met in Bisley, well I have been shooting in F class from the first year that he arrived in Italy…long time ago.
Rod: I know you as a very passionate Fclass shooter, how has this passion evolved?
FC: This passion saw its origins back in 1996 thanks to a friend of mine who was already shooting for many years, I remember that there were no shooting ranges in Italy and we awaited the hunting period to go to the mountains to do some shooting, then he opened a shooting range in Naples and every week we went twice, taking on 200 km round trip to pull off a few shots at 100 meters, then they opened the 200 m line and we began to evolve slowly with my shooting buddy. This has been the same person for 26 years, Vincenzo Foglia with whom we have shared moments of pure fun.
Rod: What are some of the challenges that Italian shooters face when it comes to practicing Fclass and what improvements have been made to date?
FC: There are difficulties as we have few ranges where we can practice F class, sometimes we have to do 1000 km round trips to be able to compete, but this does not stop us – many improvements have been made over the years. Now this discipline has passed in the hands of UITS which manages everything in an excellent way.
Rod: How has the Italian Fclass league evolved, how many shooters are there today in FTR and F open and how many matches do you run annually as part of this league?
FC: currently in Italy there are 240 Fclass shooters divided into the open, TR and TLD categories (with standard firearms)
The Italian championship takes place over 5 matches of which the best 4 are taken into consideration and those who place first in each respective match accedes the final which takes place over 2 days of competition where the results of the two days of competition are added up, this year the entitled ones at the final there were 32 in TR and 22 in OPEN.
Rod: I have seen the Italian Team grow more and more for the European Championships in Bisley, what is the driving force behind this growth in Italy?
FC: I believe that the engine of all this is the desire to try their hand at ever greater distances, my friends and I were tired of shooting at the classic 100 and 200 but 9 years ago we had the opportunity to start shooting a few shots at greater distances. Bisley is the temple of shooting in Europe and for us it was an opportunity not to be missed because we were finally going to compete with shooters who had been at this discipline for many more years than us.
Rod: Can you tell us a little about the configuration of your rifle? Jokingly I always tell you, when will you upgrade from 308win, however this cartridge and this discipline seem to continue to captivate. Why is that?
FC: Currently I shoot with a gun produced by an Italian company the BCM EUROPEARMS, the one that I won the Italian title has a 32 “long barrel with 1/11 twist, proprietary BCM action and stock produced by the same company, nightforce competition optics 15- 55×52 with FCR1 reticle, talon bipod Mark 7, DIMA RS rear bag.
As for the ammunition I use Lapua brass, vithavuori powders n150 and berger bullets Juggernaut 185 Gn over Federal GM205 primers.
I have another BCM which is the twin of the one I just described to you but with a 1/10 twist and in this one I use the same components but with Berger 200.20x bullet and Alpha munition cases.
I always laugh when you write to me and tell me change caliber make a 33XC! Well the passion for this caliber was born when I started shooting, it is a multipurpose caliber that is good in short and long distances, with this caliber you can experience everything and more.
(Rod: Now that I shoot a 33XC, I understand why Ferru likes the 308win so much. Trials with the 33XC are limited by the life of the barrel considering that each shot uses 3 times the powder of a 308win, there is less data available. and on short distances <1200m, it’s quite wasted but it packs a real punch when you’re shooting past the mile ;_) ) Want to shoot at 1 mile in Europe? Join Trapani 1 Mile shoot group.
On the market there are many components to choose from both in terms of bullets, brass and powders that allow you to carry out many tests. It is also my go to hunting cartridge especially for boar. I love the 308Win!
And here’s more sneak preview – I have another 308win incoming with 2 lug bat action and 30 “bartlein 1/10 barrel!
Rod: Why do you choose these components for your rifle and to whom do you entrust the work of your rifles? Rifles are like food in Italy, they have a certain almost religious following.
FC: The 308Win gives you a way to find the recipe for each gun – I like to experiment a lot and the 308win is the perfect caliber to do this, I choose the components according to the configuration of my gun, I am lucky enough to do this job which allows me to always find new and innovative products and as a passionate shooter I engage in experiments and testing. Currently in Italy there are many custom rifle builders and all are good, I was lucky enough to collaborate with everyone.
Rod: We know these results are the culmination of good practice and consistency. How do you train for these matches, do you have specific procedures when doing the pre-match drill, plotting, watching winds, etc.?
FC: My training sessions are with old friends, we train constantly and every time we meet everyone tries something new and takes note of what he has adjusted either to the rifle or the ammunition and makes it available to others. When we take the shot, everyone evaluates the weather conditions and once the results come up, the one who make the right wind call explains the reason for that choice and so we always have a lot of data at our disposal.

Rod: Which stage of your hand loading do you find most important for consistency? Is there any specific tool that you highly recommend that will make a difference to your stellar performance?
FC: The fundamental part in my opinion for reloading is the obsessive care of the brass, I pay a lot of attention to having correct headspace on each case and a lot of attention to the neck tension, these are the fundamental things that a good reloader must always keep in mind, the other steps are also fundamental such as trimming, annealing and seating the bullet right, trying to always be precise in every step. In my opinion all tools are important:
– the scale I use, A&D with Autotrickler, the custom made press I use by Salvadori, the Wilson dies and redding tools for measuring shoulder bump and bullet comparator. To have good and consistent results you need to have excellent products.

Will there be a trophy awaiting Ferruccio at the worlds? Well if he keeps at it at this pace, there may just be one! Goodluck Ferru,
Over and Out,
Rod
